Trucking Tops List of Deadliest US Jobs

Have you wondered why so many trucking firms place a premium on recruiting safety-conscious drivers? The answer to this question may lie in recently released government statistics. Truck driving today tops the list of the deadliest jobs in the USA.

Recently, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics released a report cataloging data about job-related deaths in the nation for 2018. Truck drivers perished on the job in greater numbers than any other group of workers. Some 966 truckers died in accidents during 2018 alone, with 831 of those deaths being heavy-duty truck drivers.

During the past decade, the industry as a whole has initiated a number of essential reforms contributing to safer driving. The Transportation Equity Act For The 21st Century provided an impetus for many of these programs. This pivotal legislation lead to the development of several measures designed to promote safer driving, including the collection of comprehensive roadway accident statistics. While too many accidents still occur, the number of annual fatalities in the trucking industry has dropped significantly. The BLS report shows that there is still work to be done.
