According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), 17% of truck drivers are affected with severe mild apnea, 5% are affected with moderate sleep apnea, and 4% are affected with severe sleep apnea. This means that over one-quarter of the drivers on the road today are at risk for being extra fatigued behind the wheel of the truck.

Daytime drowsiness is a serious issue for both the driver and the safety manager to understand, and the risk of having increased daytime drowsiness increases for drivers with sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition in which the airway is constricted due to muscular relaxation while sleeping, with interruptions in breathing lasting several seconds at a time, often accompanied by loud snoring and resulting in non-restful sleep.

Individuals considered at risk for sleep apnea are those with a body mass index of 30 or greater and a neck circumference of 17 inches or more. Drivers who are diagnosed with sleep apnea are required by the FMCSA to be “disqualified until diagnosis of sleep apnea is ruled out or has been treated successfully.”

If a medical examiner decides a driver likely suffers from sleep apnea, a sleep study will be advised. Depending on the condition’s severity, treatment for sleep apnea can last between one and four weeks. Ensuring your drivers understand sleep apnea is critical to their health, and to the safety of your fleet. For this reason, the Infinit-i Learning Library has video training on the issue in our driver health section. Watch a sample training video now.
